A time machine trip back in time to experience the explorers first views of a very unique place on earth. It is interesting to try to sort out the members personal motives and wonder about their scientific objectiveness.
This is the way I like to read about historical events. Eyewitness account from someone who was involved. Almost like being there.
we have been to YNP and gloried in its splendor. also read "the big burn" about the same time.
we will never forget the men and our president who recognized the beauty and dangers of the wilderness and preserved it for us. God forgive us if we let it slip away to the users/takers of our society.
I very much enjoyed reading Nathaniel's journal about this expedition. They were very afraid of Crow Indians and during their time in Yellowstone kept a wary eye out. Also, the information on their search for the missing Truman Everts was informative for this reader who had read his account of surviving being lost in this wilderness.
An interesting read if you're familiar with the park. The old-fashioned language makes it a little difficult to read. It's a part of history and is often referenced in the park; that alone makes it worthwhile.
Major General Henry Dana Washburn did so much in his young life before he tragically died (seems like all the men in that family died young) but a great story!
An detailed account of the first organized expedition to explore and map the country surrounding the Yellowstone. As on ebb would expect of such an undertaking, the account contains some inaccuracies, including taking credit for the development of the national park idea. None the less, the account is narrated with great enthusiasm and prose by an experienced, albeit self-absorbed author. Highly recommended for the student of Yellowstone.
